King of the Mushroom

I really need to stop painting in the middle of the night. I am not a night person at all, but I never seem to get started until 10 or so. I sort of digressed on this one and painted the type of picture that I normally do for a kid's room. I call these coloring book pictures because the black outline makes it look like it came from a coloring book. Kids love this style so I use it a lot. Unfortunately it is a lot easier to do an outline on a nice smooth wall than a bumpy canvas, so the lines aren't as clean as I'd like.

I like the little frog struggling up onto the mushroom, sort of clinging there in victory. The mushroom is pink and orange because I like pink and orange, not because the frog is on acid (as someone who shall remain nameless suggested).

Maize. What You Call Corn.

At the suggestion of my father, I tried some different techniques on this one. It was a much looser style, and since I'm not completely comfortable painting canvasses (I prefer pencil or charcoal on paper), this was far easier for me.

Secure the Blessings of Liberty

I was in a Fourth Amendment, ACLU, incendiary frame of mind tonight. For those who aren't versed in the Bill of Rights, the 4th refers to privacy issues.

The stars/eyes indicate a vigilant government. They blend into the blue background because the degradation of rights is not intended to be blatant.

Oh well

I was doing so well, 5 paintings in 5 days. Today I am crabby from spending all day with a whiney boy who refused to take a nap and would eat nothing but chicken nuggets and cheetos. So instead of painting I'm drinking a glass of wine and not painting. Better luck tomorrow.

In the interest of showing a painting every day, I'm including some that I did for Dominic's room.

I have to say that I prefer painting on walls to canvases just for the freedom. It takes a lot of discipline to restrict myself to 8x10, and I am having difficulty balancing the subject matter in the available small space. No such problem when you have a whole wall to work with!

Instant Gratification

Today I took my 3 year old son to a boomerang workshop, just to watch. I thought he'd enjoy it, but he was completely bored. He had a much better time searching for colored leaves and blowing the fluff off dandelions.

It's a little difficult to tell from the photo, but the blue background has a swirly watercolor effect and the "fluff" is colored pencil. I couldn't achieve the fuzziness I wanted using paints, my brushes aren't fine enough I suppose.

Being Green

It's not easy being green. There are as many degrees of environmentalism as there are shades of green, from tossing your soda can into a recycling bin to encorporating it into your architecture. Obviously the more the better, but a little is better than nothing.

Hummingbird

SOLD
This is a Native American symbol for the hummingbird, which symbolizes devotion, permanence and eternity. I am currently involved in a painting project for a guest bedroom with a Native American theme, so I threw in this little totem for luck and happiness. I liked the soft swirls so much that I decided to use it for today's painting. The red background stands for passion; the hummingbird is a fierce defender of it's mate and territory, despite it's small size.

Countdown

Created at the kitchen table in around 45 minutes, this 8x10 acrylic on canvas suggests marks made on a mossy prison wall to record the days of incarceration. Lacking a pen or engraving instrument, marks are made in blood. My better half finds this to be strangely uplifting.
