Thistle - more than just a weed

#4 in the Luck series

A sixpence in a bride's shoe is a famous old wedding tradition symbolizing love, happiness and good luck, and many sixpence coins feature a thistle on the back.

On the other hand, thistle is the bane of a gardener's existence, so luck is in the eye of the beholder.

Why do strangers feel obliged to make conversation?

# 3 in the Luck Series

It is amazing to me that when I am looking for inspiration it often falls right into my lap. I had a root canal Tuesday (take a moment here to feel sorry for me) and afterward I went to Walgreens to get my Vicodin prescription filled. I was waiting for the pharmacist, swollen up like a puffer fish and feeling sorry for myself, but the woman next to me felt compelled to make conversation. I tried to ignore her but not wanting to be overly rude I finally gave up. She was excitedly telling me about her recent trip to Europe and all the churches, etc. She said that in one chateau there is a mermaid chandelier and people are supposed to touch its belly for good luck, which she did. I asked if her luck improved and she said no, not really. Anyway, I thought she was a nut until I went home and curiosity got the better of me. Bolstered by Vicodin, I googled "touch a mermaid's belly for luck" and discovered that in Schloss Oberhofen (Switzerland) there really is a candle chandelier with a crazy looking mermaid. I can't manage to paste a picture of it here, but it appears to be giving a "thumbs up", and has moose antlers sprouting from it's hips. I strongly suggest that you take a look, this thing would give me nightmares!

So anyway, today's painting is a kindler gentler version of the lucky mermaid. Feel free to touch it for good luck, but I'm not making any promises.

Maoris regard whales as spiritual guardians symbolizing protection and bringing good fortune to those who venture across the ocean.
