Carmen Miranda

It's a hat. It's a tasty snack. I wonder if it attracts fruit flies? Fruit as apparel in the tropics seems iffy to me.

Bun

I remember thinking, if I can just get through this (pregnancy), everything else will be a piece of cake in comparison.

Flash forward 3 years. After serving a bowl of soup, I turn to get the peanut butter sandwich. 15 seconds, tops. I turn back to find a bewildered little boy with tiny pasta stars in his hair, down his sweater, over his jeans, and broth soaking in puddles around his socks. It is in my Christmas cactus, on the floor, the chair, the table and the cat. The dog is happily slurping it up. I swear there was only about half a cup of soup in that bowl.

"What happened!?"
"It wasn't me. My soup jumped out of the bowl in the air."

Mental image of the soup, apparently possessed by a demonic spirit, raising from the bowl and expanding to cover everything within 5 feet.

I love being a mom. I love being a mom. I love being a mom......

Little Snake

We have a problem with a colony of moles destroying our lawn, probably due to the fact that we had suicidal snakes. They used to keep the mole and chipmunk population under control but every time my husband would cut the grass we'd lose one. They would pop up to see what was making all the noise and ZING, off with his head.

Someday an archaeologist will come to the conclusion that Northern Ohio had a colony of snake-sacrificing mole-worshipers.

Mommy

SOLD

Holding hands with my little boy still makes my day.

I painted this with the image of a young, frightened mother in mind. She has taken her child and is fleeing an abusive relationship. They are standing alone in the cold at a bus stop with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Bad Dream

There is a little boy standing in our doorway in the middle of the night.

"Mommy"
"What Honey"
"Teddy had a bad dream. He's scared"
"Does Teddy want to sleep in here with us?"
"Yes. And me too"

How is it that one tiny person takes up such a large part of the bed, leaving two adults clinging precariously to the edges of the mattress?

Ice Skater

Last weekend we went out to Iceland USA in Strongsville. We had a great time pushing a big plastic cone around until Dominic informed me that he was done with the baby stuff, he was ready to be a goalie now (he's been begging to play hockey since last winter).

I was amazed by the skill of the young girls figure skating and whirling around, one in particular was dressed head to toe in purple and was quite good. Although I like to picture myself as the epitome of grace and style on the ice, the reality is a bit different. I was dressed more for warmth than appearances, and spent the morning trudging behind a couple of preschoolers (Dominic quickly found a friend). Oh, well, I can dream can't I?

Belly Dancer

Long, long ago I actually took belly dancing classes. Sort of got trapped into it by a friend, then we all had so much fun that we stuck with it for a couple years. Unfortunately, with pregnancy the belly dancing became BELLY dancing. Somehow it wasn't quite the same. Maybe someday I'll start it up again, it really is fun and great exercise, and besides I have a whole bunch of dancewear that I can't exactly wear to the mall. Hmm, Halloween is coming up...

Flying Squirrel

SOLD

Apparently someone did not get the memo, but we are supposed to have a mild winter. I heard it on the news, something to do with El Nino. Also, we saw white wooly bear caterpillars in the park. So why is it snowing? It is October, we are NOT supposed to have snow yet. Grr humph.

Prior to the unexpected flurry, I was thinking about painting a fall scene and watching a couple of squirrels leaping joyfully in my neighbor's leaf pile. They acted like children do, jumping and rolling and kicking leaves around. I love autumn. I like snow too, just not quite yet!

Run

I recently started running, not because I want to but because certain people don't think I can. (I've been somewhat sluggish about hard exercise for the past 3 years). I prefer to walk or hike, and I've always felt that the only reason to run is if you are being chased by a bear. The Susan Komen Breast Cancer 5K is in a couple weeks and I'm sure I won't be running the whole thing; I'm shooting for running about half the time and walking the rest. On 9/29 I started my "training", heading down to the canal and running on the towpath. I complete a walking/running 5K each time, just not very fast. It is very green and pretty with lots of wildlife, I've seen red salamanders, cranes, an old guy with a long grey mullet, chipmunks, mallards and lots of dead snakes and woolybears. They get squished on the path. It's hard for me to concentrate on running when I'd rather be looking at the scenery.

Sleepy Cat

I was playing around with outlines again today, and since it's grey and rainy my cats are snoozing on the couch. Seemed like as good a subject as any.

Then my little helper, who is supposed to be having "quiet time" wanted to hold the painting for me to photograph.
Next comes the fun part, where my subject and masterpiece go running down the hall, the photographer in hot pursuit.
The painting survived both the great chase and the fact that he hugged it to his chest and danced with it. Which is basically the same thing he tries to do to the cats.

Nursery

Today I finally finished the paintings for what I originally thought was a guest room. Turns out that in 6 months or so it will be a nursery! I enjoyed doing this one for my friends Holly and Eric and I'll post better photos once the room has been decorated. The lettering took forever, it was a lot harder than I expected but the pictures were fun. The lyrics are from a John Denver song and the room was just supposed to have a "lodge feel".

Bumblebee

Today we went for a little hike down to Deer Lick cave. Apparently the cave walls are salty from some prehistoric sea that used to cover Ohio and the deer like to lick the rocks. I opted not to find out for myself. Lots of fall wildflowers are in bloom and huge fuzzy bumblebees were everywhere. Once I convinced Dominic that the bees wouldn't hurt him, we were able to sit very still in a big flower patch and watch them work. He was mesmerized and I must admit it was pretty cool. When we got home he asked if I could paint a bee, and specified that the flowers had to be pink.

Goldenrod

Autumn in Ohio means lots and lots of goldenrod. You can see it everywhere, near highways, in the woods, in yards. This is just the best time of year, not too cold for hiking and everything is changing colors.

What I learned from this painting: if you are happy with the background, stop messing with it. I have a very bad habit of wanting to "fix" it, just a little. Then a little more. I need a "pause" button I think.

Aqua Drops

Last week was our first ever visit to Las Vegas and I wanted to do something that symbolized our trip. The one thing that really stands out to me was the water. Everywhere you look there is a water feature in every shade of blue imaginable: fountains, waterfalls, dolphins shooting water from their noses, mermaids, creepy fish-horse creatures, pirate ships. It seems just a little ironic in the middle of the desert. So to me, Las Vegas is all about hydration.

Daisies in a Pitcher

Today my husband took a vacation day (it's his birthday) so after taking our son to daycare we went and had massages at Lakewood Massotherapy, stopped by a coffee shop, and visited Local Girl art gallery, which I had heard about but never seen (loved it).

Then, far more relaxed, we picked up the boy and went for a walk down by the canal where we watched a beaver building a dam.

Next was pizza from Antonio's, a nice fire out on the deck, blackberry pie with ice cream and then, last but not least, I got to paint today's picture. All in all a stellar day!

Back to the painting, while we were cruising around Lakewood I spotted a law firm that had, as an apparent afterthought, put a little ceramic pitcher with some daisies in their front window. I guess it was supposed to make them look friendly or something. I just liked the daisies.

King of the Mushroom

I really need to stop painting in the middle of the night. I am not a night person at all, but I never seem to get started until 10 or so. I sort of digressed on this one and painted the type of picture that I normally do for a kid's room. I call these coloring book pictures because the black outline makes it look like it came from a coloring book. Kids love this style so I use it a lot. Unfortunately it is a lot easier to do an outline on a nice smooth wall than a bumpy canvas, so the lines aren't as clean as I'd like.

I like the little frog struggling up onto the mushroom, sort of clinging there in victory. The mushroom is pink and orange because I like pink and orange, not because the frog is on acid (as someone who shall remain nameless suggested).

At the suggestion of my father, I tried some different techniques on this one. It was a much looser style, and since I'm not completely comfortable painting canvasses (I prefer pencil or charcoal on paper), this was far easier for me.

Secure the Blessings of Liberty

I was in a Fourth Amendment, ACLU, incendiary frame of mind tonight. For those who aren't versed in the Bill of Rights, the 4th refers to privacy issues.

The stars/eyes indicate a vigilant government. They blend into the blue background because the degradation of rights is not intended to be blatant.

Oh well

I was doing so well, 5 paintings in 5 days. Today I am crabby from spending all day with a whiney boy who refused to take a nap and would eat nothing but chicken nuggets and cheetos. So instead of painting I'm drinking a glass of wine and not painting. Better luck tomorrow.

In the interest of showing a painting every day, I'm including some that I did for Dominic's room.

I have to say that I prefer painting on walls to canvases just for the freedom. It takes a lot of discipline to restrict myself to 8x10, and I am having difficulty balancing the subject matter in the available small space. No such problem when you have a whole wall to work with!

Instant Gratification

Today I took my 3 year old son to a boomerang workshop, just to watch. I thought he'd enjoy it, but he was completely bored. He had a much better time searching for colored leaves and blowing the fluff off dandelions.

It's a little difficult to tell from the photo, but the blue background has a swirly watercolor effect and the "fluff" is colored pencil. I couldn't achieve the fuzziness I wanted using paints, my brushes aren't fine enough I suppose.

It's not easy being green. There are as many degrees of environmentalism as there are shades of green, from tossing your soda can into a recycling bin to encorporating it into your architecture. Obviously the more the better, but a little is better than nothing.

Hummingbird

SOLD
This is a Native American symbol for the hummingbird, which symbolizes devotion, permanence and eternity. I am currently involved in a painting project for a guest bedroom with a Native American theme, so I threw in this little totem for luck and happiness. I liked the soft swirls so much that I decided to use it for today's painting. The red background stands for passion; the hummingbird is a fierce defender of it's mate and territory, despite it's small size.

Created at the kitchen table in around 45 minutes, this 8x10 acrylic on canvas suggests marks made on a mossy prison wall to record the days of incarceration. Lacking a pen or engraving instrument, marks are made in blood. My better half finds this to be strangely uplifting.
